The poems of Matthew J. Spireng's WHAT FOCUS IS swoop and dive like a bird of prey, embodying broad vistas and pinpoint precision in their sharply-crafted lines.
What Focus Is Matthew J Spireng 9781936370399 Books
I'll quote the first lines of the first poem in the book, "The Horse": "I cannot leave the image of the horse in the water,/the horse thrown overboard in the middle of the ocean/on a moonlit night, the horse following/the slow-moving ship, eyes fixed/on that only other object in the water." If you can forget that picture, rising out of nowhere and sustained for seven more lines, this is not the book for you. The bar is notched high at the outset, and stays there in every poem that follows. This is a collection by a master poet. Genius is actually the correct word, because one keeps thinking 'where do these poems come from?' Georgia O'Keeffe took pictures like this, sometimes. But with Mr Spireng it's all the time. He can make even a particle of dust breathe - make you conscious of that, make you conscious that if you listen and look hard enough, everything breathes. That is the zero point of every poem in this book. That is what, well, focus is when he writes. This kind of poetry is what America does best: when it's been one hundred percent crazy and now is one hundred percent sane.
I've read his other collections - Out of Body, Young Farmer, Encounters, Just This, Inspiration Point. I was hoping for a new one, and here it is. This new one isn't better - they're all of this quality. The fact that there are so many poems is what's extraordinary. A handful of poems like these would make any poet think, well, that's it, I can't sustain more, I'd better stop, I'm painting myself into a corner, like Salinger. But he sustains it. Forget the corner. Nothing has walls in his poems. I don't know if Spireng, when he removes every single fake thing from a vision, realizes that the emerging reality, because honest, gives solace. But it does. That's why great poetry, direct poetry, of which there is so little in any given generation, is a gift to readers who now and then come across it. In paperback.

What Focus Is Matthew J Spireng 9781936370399 Books Reviews
I am so proud of Matt Spireng. I knew Him all through high school. I wish I were a writer, but he IS! I brought his book along on a vacation cruise with Royal Carribean's Explorer of the Seas because real life is too hectic (not enough time to sit and read)... broke a toe on St. Maarten's beach.. and hence got to thoroughly enjoy this poetic book rather than visit the islands on the second half of the trip. So Matt saved me from boredom and depression. Some of his reflections were even alluded to at the dinner table we were assigned to.. a man from Montreal Canada spoke of having been to and Asseteague and Chincoteague. And I got to remember a little French.
An added benefit for me is recognizing some of the places he writes about, but the ideas expressed would be universal even if you don't live where we are from. Even if you don't usually read poetry, the free verse style can just sharpen your focus (LOL) to take in the ideas, descriptions, wonderment and fulfillment of opening your inner eyes to see things in every day situations in a new way.
Way to go, Matt!
